CherryFlex Concentrate

My new bottle of CherryFlex Concentrate
UPDATE: The very kind folks at Underwood Orchards are offering my readers and friends a $5 discount on their first order of CherryFlex Concentrate or CherryFlex Gel. Go get it!!! The Discount code is Ginger (Not case specific).

I was recently given the opportunity to test out a new product entering the market. CherryFlex is an American brand of superfruit made from the whole fruit. Tart Cherry has recently become increasingly popular because it is a natural source of anti-oxidants that help relieve joint and muscle pain, and it has properties to release melatonin to help with sleep. Well, I have issues with all of that, but I hate taking supplements or medications or anything really. Anyway ...CherryFlex has a new product that is a concentrate. The concentrate is a raw past of the entire Montmorency red tart cherry from Michigan. Pulp and skin (no seed). I thought sure, I will give it a shot. So, they sent me a 8-ounce bottle (16 servings) of CherryFlex Concentrate and asked for my opinion. So, here goes ...
Straight off the spoon
How do I use it? Well, the beauty of the concentrate, in my opinion, is the flexibility of use. It's not like a juice concentrate that has to be mixed in water and becomes juice that you have to drink ounces of. I'm not the best at taking in fluids. It's a thick liquid, kind of the consistency of thick maple syrup, smooth texture. So ... since a tablespoon is a serving, you can take it straight off the spoon. I mixed it into Iced Tea for fluids. You could mix it in water for cherry juice. If I drank fizzy water or coke, I think it would be an awesome fizzy cherry juice or cherry coke. And, then I had fun with it. I used it like sauce over ice cream. I ate it like syrup on a waffle for a special treat. And, when I felt really decadent, I used it like sauce on vegan frozen cheesecake. Which did I like best? I think Ice Cream Sauce was my favorite. I bet there are tons of other ways to try it.

What's in it? I admit, I like natural products and plant-based. I don't like it when I don't know what something is, if it sounds too chemical-ly, or if I can't tell what it came from. I hate when a product has "artificial flavors and colors." What is that? Anyway, the concentrate has two ingredients: Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate and Whole Red Tart Cherry Paste. No added anything. No added sugar. VEGAN!!! Of course, I wouldn't have used it otherwise. And, only 50 calories per tablespoon serving. I can dig that.

How does it taste? Really, for me it depended on how I used it. Straight from the spoon tasted a little like cough syrup to me. Now, I'm a bit of a freak and I like the flavor of cough syrup and cold medicine. It is a little sweet and a lot tart. A little more tart than a pink Sweet Tart. In Iced Tea, it added a strong cherry flavor to it and overwhelmed the tea. It was more tart than sweet, but had enough sweetness. Oh ... I might add it to my lemonade or limeade. Just thought of that as an option (or even lemon malt beverage of lemon infused vodka, hmmmm). Back to flavor. On a waffle, it was like syrup. Ice cream was like a tart sauce. Cheesecake ... divine.
I like my ice cream
Did it work? Well, sleep is my biggest issue. Nighttime snacking is another issue as you can tell. So, I was most interested in it for sleep properties. I had a tablespoon at night about an hour before I wanted to go to bed. I admit it, it was easier for me to remember than melatonin, because it was a snack and I didn't have to remember to go take a supplement. I admit, I forgot a few times. I could tell a difference. On nights I used it, I slept more soundly than usual. Nights I forgot and I was up all hours as usual. I actually felt sleepy when I used it. Now, I am still a chronic insomniac with daytime sleepiness, so I can't say it was perfect sleep, but it was better. As for inflammation, well, my hip has been a problem for almost 2 years now. After about a week of steady use, I was thinking to myself, "Either this stuff works, or I've really been easy on my hip." Not pain free, but pain better. I'm out of it now, and the hip is flaring. Coincidence? I don't know. We will see when I get back on it.
Waffle syrup
Where can I get it? Well, on the website, they have a list of stores that carry the brand. And soon, like in a few days I hear, they will have their own website at Underwood Orchards where you (and me) can order on-line.I can't wait!!!
Vegan cheesecake. I was playing with filters
What else do they have? There is a whole line of products available. I guess they liked my pictures and a quick comment I made, so they are sending me Red Tart Cherry Gel to try. I will let you know what I think. It does contain vegetable glycerin as an extra ingredient compared to the concentrate. They also have a dark chocolate version of the gel, but ingredient list says it contains milk, so I'll have to skip it. I bet it's pretty tasty though. The SoftGels contain gelatin, so I'll be passing those also. There are also CherryFlex Shots. 2.5 ounces of liquid goodness.

PopSugar MustHave Fall 2015

PopSugar MustHave is a monthly lifestyle subscription box. I call it a Christmas stocking in a box and I look forward to it every month.  It's filled with items that I might not purchase for myself, but that I will use and love. Just a bit of luxury.

The usual subscription box is $39.99/month, but if you purchase 3 or 6 month subscriptions, there is a little discount. And, they have discounts every month if you find the codes. Black Friday they had a special for $75 off a 6-month subscription. So, my $214.70 ($35.78/box) came to 139.70 ($23.28/box). Not a bad deal when you consider all that's in it. A few times a year, they release a Special Edition Box. I have found that the past few months PopSugar MustHave has been hitting it out of the park, so I couldn't resist the Fall Style box for $100.

The Special Edition Boxes are packaged a little different from the regular monthly boxes. The box is packaged inside of the shipping box. Each item is individually tissue wrapped and then the entire contents are wrapped in tissue. Of course, a fold-out is included with a description of the included items.
The Fall Style box arrived earlier than I expected. I love how the Special edition boxes are packaged differently. Sleek black boxes. Individually wrapped items. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning opening all my gifts.

The first item I opened with Canvas Home Dauville Coasters in Platinum: These were what gave the box serious weight.  The hand-painted porcelain coaster have a platinum finish that is mirror-like. I was impressed at how pretty they are. They will add a touch of actual style to my living room. I only wish they had a holder so that when I stack them, they will stay in place. Retail $46

Next up was Tatcha Classic Rice Enzyme Powder: I cannot wait to try this. I am a big fan of gently enzyme exfoliation and the reputation of rice enzyme powders are amazing. Just a little powder in damp hands and gently rub into the skin. The bottle it is in is also really nice, which I think gives a reflection of the quality of the contents. Retail $65.

Then I opened Smith & Cult Nailed Lacquer in No Poem. This deep color is described as the perfect transition to fall. It is dark greenish. I like dark colors, so I'm happy. The lacquer is supposed to be long-lasting. We will see because I am hard on polish. I love the bottle. Once again, I think the packaging does tell a story about the contents. I couldn't find any information about animal testing or animal products. I did think the names and colors of their products on-line are really cool.  Retail $18.

Becca Cosmetics Ombre Rouge Eye Palette: I actually did find some information about animal testing and animal products. The company is looking for plant-based alternatives and does not do animal testing. I checked the ingredients of this product ... plant-based. Anyhow, I love the five shades in the palette and the mirror inside the case. These colors work for me. And, I appreciate the "how-to" guide included because I am not talented or creative when it comes to applying makeup. Retail $40.
Deepa Guarnani Aria Necklace. This I really love, and it surprised me. First glance and it looked like costume jewelry, which I'm not a big fan of. But, the crystals are embroidered onto fabric and it's handmade in India. The length is great to wear with a V-neck. I actually think it can nicely dress-up a T-shirt and jeans. And, another great feature is the jewelry bag it came it. It's pretty and it's generous in size. Retail $90

Swing Design Aura Lacquer Aquamarine Valet Tray: I really like it. I admit, I was surprised. It's lightweight, but I love the blue base in the white box. I think I will find great use for it on my dresser or desk and it adds another touch of style. Retail $54

Final opinion? I love the Fall Style box. I hate using the word "class," but I do really feel like the selections add a class and style to the home, wardrobe, and beauty routine. I am really really happy that I jumped in again. Honestly, they do get better and better. I probably wouldn't have picked any of these items to purchase for myself, but I will love and enjoy each and every one of them. Total retail $313. So also a great value for the $100.

Wantable Intimates September 2015

Wantable has 5 subscriptions: an Accessory box (I am not a good accessorizor), their Intimate box, Make-up box and their Fitness wear and Style box (try on at home and keep what you want). For the Accessory, Intimate, and Make-up, the cost is $40 the first month and then a 10% discount subsequent months if you keep everything. You can return individual items, though, so it's not a keep all or none sort of thing. When you sign up, you set up a style profile an select things you love, like, and dislike. They will never send something you dislike. Each box is selected for you, so my box will be different from everyone else's box. And, you can return if you want. That's a bonus most boxes don't allow. Aaaannnddd .... you always have the option to skip a month when you just need to take some time off. I chose the Intimates box. Assortment of undergarments, socks, loungewear, etc. Should be 3-4 items per box depending on value of items.

One of the things that impresses me most about Wantable is how quickly they ship. My August Intimate box arrived exactly on August 1. My style profile says that I love Loungewear, Leggings, and Socks. I have reviewed on their site each item I've received and they seem to do a better job selecting my items each time.

Before I start my review, I want to say "thanks" to someone who used my link and placed their first order. That scored me $10 off this box. And, I didn't even think anyone read my reviews, so thanks also for reading.

I can always count on my Wantable box to be shipped and received on the first of the month. September was no different. Precisely on September 1, my box arrived. I didn't have a special note this month. Probably because I've been so slow to review ... either here, and on the website, where I review and give feedback on items received.

Happy Socks Ladies Brief: I am pretty casual, so sexy undies are a rare occasion, but comfortable cotton briefs that have a cute pattern will be worn all the time. Retail $12. My price $7.38
Adrienne Vittadini Low Cut Sock: This was a six-pack of socks!!! I love having fun colors. These will hide nicely under clogs and I can mix-match to have mismatched pairs. They are also very soft and will quickly make it into rotation. Retail $21. My price $12.92
And finally: Spring Fling Bottom and Top in Aruba Blue. I think by now the stylists have learned I love loungewear. A LOT. After a day in uniform, I am quick to change into something comfortable to hang out in and these are so much cuter than grubby sweats and t-shirt. I love the feminine detailing with the peephole shoulders and the sweet little bows. The order details say they are perfect for spring, and we are nearing autumn. Yeah, the color is springlike, but I am not going to refuse to wear them just because of the season. Retail $16 each. My price $9.85 each.

Final thoughts? I'm happy with this month's selection. I am getting happier and happier. I do have a lot of loungewear now. But, it's getting into colder seasons, so I wonder if I'll be getting leggings and tights in the coming months. Retail value $65. My price (with credits) $26.

Serendipity July 2015 and Little Lace Box August 2015

Little Lace Box is a subscription box for women. It's curated for women by three sisters and isn't really described as a "lifestyle" box, but curates their boxes around particular themes. They used to be a monthly box and that is changing after the April box. I think because of their popularity, they grew really fast. They put so much thought into the curations, it has been challenging keeping up. After April ... the subscriptions are going to every other month ... six times a year. I had an annual subscription ... so it extends it out 18 months for the remaining 9 boxes. No complaints.

You can purchase a bi-monthly subscription for $59.99. 3 boxes over 6 months for $149.97. 6 boxes over 12 months for $269.99. If you have a recurring subscription, you can email them to suspend subscription for any reason and then resume when  you are ready.  I purchased mine when the annual (12-box) subscription was $383.90 ($31.99/box). Shipping is between the 20th-23rd each month and they bill monthly just before shipping.  If you like items you receive and want more, they have an on-line boutique where you can purchase more. For every dollar you spend in the boutique or on the purchase of the box, you get a loyalty point.  50 loyalty points is one dollar to spend in the boutique.

In the process of searching for items for their curated boxes, they come across items that just don't fit the theme, but that they love and want to share. So ... the luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things ...found itself as theSerendipity pouchThe Serendipity pouch will be sent on the months that the Little Lace Box is not. The cost of the subscription is $9.99 per month. While they are working out the kinks, the sisters are sending this to current subscribers for free. It's these things that really show the personal touch, and that they really care, that make all the difference. And, all the products and related items are available on the website.

As Serendipity is new, also some growing pains, or kinks. The sisters really care and want things to be right, so this message was put on Facebook. I knew it would be worth the wait. It has been so far.
A little more excitement on Facebook was this post that showed up in early August also. The English Breakfast box was amazing, so have all their boxes been. I knew they were working to hit it out of the park.
First look at the box
Finally, I received an email to expect my box. And I waited anxiously until it arrived. Serendipity and Elizabeth & Mr Darcy were combined into a single box. Since Serendipity was supposed to come first, We'll look at those first. I really do like that they write a story with the insert that explains why they chose certain items for their boxes.

Get Dirty Mud Bar by Mindful Minerals: There is a trend for natural beauty products to be pricey. These are made of all natural ingredients without some of the bad stuff, like Parabens and Petrochemicals. And although exclusive and hard to find (spas and Little Lace Box website), they are not overpriced. I really like the smell of this. Very fresh. Can't wait to try it. Retail $4.00

Steep &Go by the Tea Spot: this is super cool idea. It's a small cold-brew infuser. It works with regular water bottles (which I hate to buy, but sometimes have to). Just add a pinch of loose-leaf tea and let it sit for 10-minutes. Voila ... Iced Tea on the go. Retail $5.95
And they were kind enough to complete the idea with Chill Out, Organic Loose Leaf Tea. What a great pairing. This is actually specially formulated for cold-brew so works great with the Steep & Go. It's naturally sweet with licorice root, hibiscus, and peppermint. No need to add sugar. Retail $1.29
I love receiving something that is vegan on purpose and not by accident. Malibu C Miracle Repair Hair Constructor. Just a sample, but my hair hasn't been cut in many months and the ends are getting well ... frizzy ... after a summer of sun and chlorine. I am looking forward to trying this, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It sounds amazing, adding shine and moisture. I could use that. Retail $3

And, final item ... the perfect ending. Evite.com thank you notes. Because I really do want to say "Thank you" for the curation. The cards have a nice heavy feel and texture. Perfect to say "thanks" with meaning. And, an invitation to check out Evite.com to create your own custom stationary. Retail $5

Retail for Serendipity: $19.24. Good value for the $9.99 price point. Better since right now, it's free to previous subscribers. Well worth the wait. Now ... On to Elizabeth & Mr. Darcy

The big ticket item in the box was the Elizabeth & Mr. Darcy Flower Vase. This is a small vase that is really suited for a few flowers, but it's very high quality. It is hand-made by Mary Rose Young and it's a one-of-a kind design just for Little Lace Box. This makes it even more special. I love that in support of small companies and artists, they included not just their thoughts for including this vase with the theme, but also why the artist created the design. I love the blue vase with etched flowers and the rose design on top. It feels feminine, and delicate, and strong all at once. Retail $124.

What vase would be complete without a bouquet? And Little Lace Box, with their own personal touch, also gives the subscribers the chance to personalize every single box. Shortly after the box arrived, an email followed with a code for $40 towards a bouquet from The Bouqs.com. I've already checked out the website and know exactly which bouquet from their sustainably grown flowers from a Volcano on the equator. I'm assuming that means Ecuador. Last year I learned that one of the largest exports from Ecuador is flowers, because they really are so amazing. Retail $40.

For feminine and unique and trendsetting women, Defineme fragrance. I received Clara. Very floral, but fresh scent. Some florals are heavy and matronly. This feels fresh and light. I love that it has a rollerball application, but in a square traditional old-school shape perfume bottle. Retail $36

Another great feature that sets Little Lace Box apart from the rest. Not just the support of small, local businesses and artisans. Not just that they curate by themes of things that the sisters love. (By the way, you feel like you are part of the family.) But, the search for things that they love and sometime have things made just for them to send just to us. The My Shea-Rona Shea Butter is created just for Little Lace Box. 30% Shea butter has the potential to be heavy, but it's just creamy and heavenly. Because of the density, a little goes a long way. There were several scents, and I received You Leave Me Peachless. I really want to taste it. It smells just like a perfectly ripe and juicy sweet peach. Retail $19.99. I actually think that the retail could be higher based on similar products I've seen.
All contents

So, what do I think? I love that the box is, as usual, filled with thought. It's unique and you never know what to expect. The number of items varies as the items are based on themes and the value of the items varies based on the theme. I love the way it feels personal like I'm getting a glimpse into the lives of some really amazing women. I love the way it feels personal because I get the chance to create something unique in every box. Something that speaks to me and isn't someone's idea of what will be most appealing to the masses. Retail value $219.99

October's Theme is Authentic Autumn-Be your authentic self. It talks about fashion and expressing yourself, so I'm very curious to see what they will find for us. I can't wait.

Eating through Austin-Counter Culture

Austin is a short 90-minute drive away from San Antonio. But, that seems so far for a meal. Even if Austin is the Vegan Capitol of the World. But, when CurlyKate, a friend from high school, told me she was flying in to Houston and was willing to drive 2 1/2 hours to meet for brunch "half-way" in Austin, how could I resist? Although she is not vegan, she is more than willing to go to vegan places with me. So, my job was to find the location. I've eaten at a few places, but c'mon ... there are so many to choose from. I have to find a new place for brunch and I came across Counter Culture

Located at 2337 East Cesar Chavez (on the corner of Clara Street), Saturday and Sunday Brunch is served from 11 AM to 3 PM. They are open 7 days a week from 11 AM to 10 PM.

Counter Cultures started in July 2009 as a food trailer. They serve internationally inspired vegan comfort food. They focus on organic, locally grown food and maintain as much of an environmentally friendly impact as possible.

When we arrived, what we noticed first was the fun artistic pictures of dogs on the wall. Next was the eclectic diners. From earthy to upscale. Singles, couples, and families. And we had to check the chalkboard for daily specials. I'm a fan of specials because it usually means they got something local to use. It was going to be hard to decide what to order. Thank goodness, the Musician came, so I could snack of his plate, too.

While we waited for CurlyKate to arrive, we sampled the Lavender Lemonade and the Mimosa. We had a mimosa option of orange juice or fresh tropical fruits. We chose tropical fruits. Both were cool and refreshing.
The service was friendly and casual. CurleyKate ordered the East Side Quesadilla with Cashew cheese, Seitan, potatoes, spinach. It was very tasty. Cheesy. The salsa was smooth and full of flavor, but not too spicy. And we liked the extra cashew cheese on the side. This is a winner for breakfast or lunch.
I ordered the Daily Special Omelet. I admit, I have no idea how to make a tofu-based omelet, but they did. It was stuffed with spinach, broccoli, and cashew cheese again, with pesto on top. I had no hesitation finishing it off. I could order a side and my lifetime favorite breakfast item is biscuits and gravy. So, that's what I had. OMG!!! There is another place where I get vegan biscuits and gravy. This is better!!! This will satisfy that desire every time.
The Musician went with Tofu Ranchero. Salsa, black beans, poblanos, avocado. A true Texas breakfast full of amazing flavor. He was undecided about Tempeh Bacun (yes, that's how it's spelled), or Seitan Sausage. The server made a recommendation for sausage and he wasn't disappointed. Omnivores out there wouldn't know the difference.
So, what do I think? I can hardly wait to go back for dinner sometime. We found another winner in Austin. The company was best of all. Thanks CurlyKate for making time in your busy schedule for me. And thanks for making the drive. And thanks for encouraging us to find another great place to eat. Miss you already. Can't wait for the next time we can meet up.
